How we rank

How we rank: each model year's reliability score (0–100) compares its owner complaints filed with NHTSA, per car sold, with similar cars from 2015–2024. Repair costs are our forecast for the next 5 years at 12,000 miles a year. Prices are our estimate of a typical used asking price today; mileage, trim and condition move the real price a lot. Cost to own adds the value the car loses, repairs and fuel at $3.40 a gallon. Model years with too little data for a confident rating are left out. Data through 2026-10-30.

Questions people ask

What used cars should you avoid?

The used car to avoid most is the 2023 GMC Yukon (0/100): it has the most owner complaints per car sold of any model year we rate, relative to similar cars. The 2017 Ford Escape and the 2016 Ford Focus are next.

Does a low score mean every car is bad?

No. It means owners of that model year filed more complaints per car sold than for similar cars. Many individual cars are fine; a pre-purchase inspection and the car's service history matter most.

Where does the data come from?

Owner complaints and recalls from NHTSA, the US road-safety agency, divided by our estimates of sales. Data through 2026-10-30.
